About St Lawrence Church – Built by the- Jesuits in 1565 (and renovated later), the church of St Lawrence in Agassaim overlooks the village from its vantage point on the little hillock on which it is situated. Built in exquisite Portuguese style architecture, this 16thcentury church is a sight to behold. With a large two-storeyed bell tower and a huge porch with arches and balustrades, the church is set amidst serene surroundings that invite one to sit and ponder.
Dedicated to St Lawrence the Martyr or Sao Lourenco, known the world over as the patron saint of the poor and of cooks, the villagers of Agassaim get together on August 10 every year, to celebrate the patron feast.
