Our Lady of Good Counsel Church – Sion 16

About Our Lady of Good Counsel Church – In the course of the 16th and the 17th centuries, the Franciscans established or are said to have established several Churches and Chapels in Bombay. The History of this Church dates back to the 16th Century and is one of the oldest churches in Bombay built by the Portuguese Franciscans. .

The Franciscans returned to Bombay. Their forebears, the founders of the Church of Bombay island, worked for the salvation and sanctification of many. The present generation no less are working for the same purpose. That God is blessing their efforts and labours is apparent from the fact that by their example and preaching they have attracted a dozen young men to the Order, thus showing that the hopes they entertained, when settling in Bombay, have been realized.

Hello – I visited the church after many years and noticed that Mother Mary’s statue in the grotto is in very bad need of repair and restoration. Please let me know if I can help in any way to donate money to get this restored. it was a sad sight for me to see the beautiful statue missing a hand and very badly marred. You can contact me at my email id if I can help in any way.

    Warm regards,
    Deepa.

    Deat Fathers,

My name is Paolo Cicconofri, I was educated in Tolentino and I taught for many years in a secondary school named after the Blessed Odorico. Last year I edited a book about Odorico’s journey to the Far East. It was so that I came across the account of Thane’s Martyrdom and decided to devote myself to a research into the Blessed Thomas from Tolentino and his companions.

I have discovered that the four Martyrs are represented on the stained-glass windows of the church of Our Lady of Good Counsel, work by Father Christopher Coelho. Since the book I am working at will be illustrated, I would be grateful if you could send me some large high-definition photographs of your church and the stained-glass windows and, also, if you could tell me why, when and how the stained-glass windows were settled and completed.

I thank you for your kind attention.

    Best regards.

    Paolo Cicconofri
